This year, the nominations were dominated by Damien Chazelle’s La La Land with eleven nominations while Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival and Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals followed closely with nine nominations. Overall, keeping up with trends from previous award ceremonies such as the Golden Globes or the SAG Awards, many of the speeches contained political implications. Due to the political nature of many speeches, broadcasting companies told The Sun that some political materials had to be edited due to the influx of political content in speeches that could offend possible viewers.
Some notable events from the BAFTAs included the attendance of the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William. Wearing a miraculous Alexander McQueen gown, this is the third BAFTAs ceremony that the Duchess has attended.
Other notable events included the sweeping of five awards by La La Land out of their eleven nominations. Many speculate that La La Land will go on to win a number of awards at the upcoming Oscars on February 26th.
Ken Loach, director of the film Veteran won the Outstanding British Film trophy and delivered a somewhat shocking but bold speech to the audience about the “brutal” United Kingdom government. He claimed that the poor were treated disgracefully by the government and expressed further regret to the refugee children that the UK government refused to take in. “In the real world it’s getting darker and in the struggle that is coming between the rich and the poor and the wealthy and the privileged and the big corporations and politicians who speak for them.”
On the Best Dressed list included Best Actress winner Emma Stone in a Chanel couture dress and trousers, topping her look with Tiffany & Co. jewelry. Despite her look previously judged during the SAG Awards as a nominee for the “worst-dressed” list, Nicole Kidman made a statement at the BAFTA ceremony in a low cut halter dress by Armani Prive with 130 carats of Harry Winston Diamonds. Meryl Streep kept her look simple as she wore a sharp Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci trouser suit and wore her trademark glasses. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them star Eddie Redmayne arrived with his wife Hannah Bagshawe who also wore an Alexander McQueen gown just like the Duchess of Cambridge. Finally, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children actress Ella Purnell also made the best-dressed list as a relatively new face, wearing a Miu Miu gown with Atelier Swarovski jewels.
